Traveling with the intrepid TV business news anchor Susie Gharib is not your normal TV news field trip. I learned that fast when I was flying across the country, working with her at the Nightly Business Report as she interviewed a who's who of Federal Reserve luminaries. For most journalists, boarding a plane after a hard day at work would be a time for some R&R. But for Gharib, it was time to get to work. She is the energizer bunny of the news business.
We would sit together on the plane and go over what worked, and what could have worked better from the previous interview. Then we would get cracking on the next VIP on our schedule. Susie wouldn't just throw together a few questions. She would read and research, and then discuss what the possible answer could be, in order to be ready with the follow-up. Then we would write up long lists of questions, and think and discuss each one. We would carefully select the best ones, and then take a break to mull it all over.
Actually I took a break. Susie would keep going, working on something related to her kids or her husband. She was also a supermom. Raising two kids in New York City, both of whom have now grown up to have exciting careers and their own grownup lives.
Susie and her husband made a brave and very #FinancialGrownup move as newlyweds that took a lot of guts. She discusses the tough decision in "How to Be a Financial Grownup: Proven Advice from High Achievers on How to Live Your Dreams and Have Financial Freedom". Her lesson to share is right on the money. Take the time to read it.
Susie continues to interview the most exciting and inspiring business leaders in the world as the Senior Special Correspondent @Fortune magazine. You can see some of her interviews here. She is also a contributor to Nightly Business Report on CNBC.
It has been more than a decade since Susie and I worked together but the work ethic and dedication to being your best that she taught me has been essential to my own personal success. She taught be to believe that yes- I could hold my own interviewing the most famous and accomplished individuals in the world. She continues to inspire me and countless other journalists. I am so honored she agreed to be a part of the #FinancialGrownup project.
